If you own a goldendoodle in Summerville, you already know: that soft, curly coat doesn't take care of itself. Doodle hair keeps growing, tangles easily, and mats can form close to the skin before you ever notice them. Here's how often to book professional grooming, and how to keep your doodle comfortable in between.
The short answer: every 4–6 weeks
Most goldendoodles, labradoodles and bernedoodles do best with a full professional groom every 4–6 weeks. Dogs with curlier, fleece-type coats or longer styles usually need the shorter end of that range. A shorter cut can stretch you closer to 6–8 weeks.
Signs your doodle is overdue
- Hair covering their eyes
- Tight clumps behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits or on the legs
- A musty smell even after a bath
- Long nails clicking on the floor
- Constant scratching or licking
Brushing at home between grooms
Brush your doodle 3–4 times a week with a slicker brush, then go back over the coat with a metal comb. If the comb can't glide through to the skin, there's a tangle hiding underneath. Pay extra attention to friction spots: behind the ears, the collar line, armpits and the back of the legs. Always dry your doodle completely after swimming or bath time, because damp curls mat quickly in our Lowcountry humidity.
